The first Business Improvement District commenced in 1970 in Toronto Canada. Business Owners and Property Owners came together to harness their collective strength to make Bloor West Village a competitive business district in the face the challenges of their business environment. The idea was so successful that now there are more than 3000 BIDs in Canada, USA, UK, South Africa, Germany, Japan, Singapore and New Zealand. The concept is considered to be worlds best practice in mainstreet management. I was fortunate to work in the Heart of London Business Alliance in the West End. My book Mainstreet Management explains the concept in more detail.
